Primo ricordo olfattivo. Per tutto il tempo che posso ricordare, sono sempre stato affascinato da odori diversi. Ho sempre prestato attenzione all’odore di una strofa o di un particolare fiore. Ricordo che mia madre mi parlò un giorno delle cimici marmorizzate marroni, e io le andai a cercare nel mio cortile, quando vivevo in Grecia. Le calpestavo e raccoglievo solo per annusarle. Mi sono interessato a diversi odori, buoni o male, per tutto il tempo che potevo ricordare.
Cos’è per te il profumo? Il profumo è molto più di un semplice mezzo per avere un buon odore. Il profumo è un estensione della personalità, un mezzo con cui trasmetti come ti senti un dato giorno e, infine, è un accessorio olfattivo. Mi piace indossare ogni giorno una fragranza diversa. Come si suol dire, varietà è il sale della vita, quindi non vorrei indossare la stessa fragranza tutti i giorni. Il profumo, per me, è un linguaggio non parlato che trasmette alcune delle più intime parti della propria personalità.
Come è nato il tuo amore per i profumi? Penso che il merito sia di mia madre. Mi regalava sempre fragranze (di tutto, da Paco Rabanne Pour Homme a Givenchy Pi), e mi ha instillato l’amore per le fragranze. Il mio primo profumo in assoluto è CK Be di Calvin Klein. Presi l’abitudine di indossarlo tutti i giorni e non vedevo l’ora di indossarlo ogni mattina. Se non fosse per mia madre potrei non avere l’ossessione per le fragranze che ho oggi.
Quanti profumi possiedi? È passato un po’ di tempo dall’ultima volta che li ho contati, ma immagino che siano tra le 2.500 e le 3.000 bottiglie! Questo non include i decant. Lo so, è abbastanza eccessivo. Ahah.
Che tipo di profumi preferisci? Nel corso degli anni, ho imparato ad amare tutti i generi allo stesso modo. Ho sempre considerato poco le fragranze floreali, ma ultimamente mi sono davvero divertito con i miei profumi al gelsomino. Niente batte un profumo floreale di alta qualità. Fa un ottimo lavoro nel connetterti alla natura e creare un senso di tranquillità.
Tra i tuoi profumi quale ti rappresenta di più? Sono abbastanza fortunato da aver avuto l’opportunità di lavorare come direttore creativo per diversi brand. Penso che nessuna fragranza mi rappresenti meglio di una su cui ho lavorato direttamente. Una di queste fragranze si chiama Raised Spirits, ed è l’espressione di uno dei miei generi preferiti! È una fragranza gourmand che presenta un accordo di burro salato, caramello, sciroppo di zucchero di canna e vaniglia. La dolcezza è esattamente ciò che bramo quando fa freddo, ed è stato un piacere lavorarci per oltre un anno. Essere un direttore creativo mi ha dato l’opportunità di viaggiare per il mondo e lavorare con alcuni dei miei profumieri preferiti del settore. Per questo, sono molto grato.
l profumo che ti fa sentire potente e sicuro di te. I profumi che mi fanno sentire più sicuro di me sono quelli universalmente apprezzati. Occasionalmente mi diverto a indossare profumi con cui corro intrinsecamente il rischio che chi sia sensibile alle fragranze non sia troppo entusiasta di sentire ciò che indosso. Pertanto, fragranze come Meteore di Louis Vuitton o Uncut Gem di Frederic Malle mi danno sempre fiducia!
Il profumo che ti fa tornare bambino. Le fragranze che mi fanno sentire giovane o incanalano il mio bambino interiore sono quelle che ho indossato per la maggior parte della mia giovinezza! CK Be di Calvin Klein, Givenchy Pi, Armani Attitude, Calvin Klein’s Crave e Axe Dark Temptation. Anche se non indosso più molte di queste fragranze, occuperanno tutte un posto speciale nel mio cuore per molto tempo a venire.
Il profumo che hai usato più a lungo. Colleziono fragranze da quando avevo 10 anni, quindi diverse fanno parte della mia collezione da oltre due decenni. Tuttavia, ci sono molte fragranze che ho riacquistato più volte nel corso degli anni, come Au Masculin di Lempicka e Le Male di Jean Paul Gaultier. Ci sono alcune fragranze che indosso quotidianamente per periodi di tempo prolungati. Altre le indosso una volta e potrebbero passare settimane o addirittura mesi prima che mi ritrovi in vena di indossarle di nuovo.
Il profumo che indossi oggi. Me lo può descrivere con tre aggettivi? Percival di Parfums de Marly, e lo descriverei come fresco, deciso e dinamico.
Un profumo che evoca momenti felici. Una fragranza che eleva sempre il mio umore è Nishane Ege. L’ho indossato durante un viaggio a Bryson City, nella Carolina del Nord, e mi ricorda sempre i momenti rilassanti trascorsi con amici e familiari! C’è anche qualcosa nelle note erbacee e aromatiche nella fragranza che trovo molto rilassanti.
Se dovessi scegliere un solo profumo della tua collezione da portare con te su un’isola deserta, quale sarebbe? La fragranza che porterei è quella che mi ricorderebbe di più casa. Questo allevierebbe i sentimenti di nostalgia di casa. Avrei bisogno di quel costante promemoria per motivarmi e ispirarmi a trovare una via d’uscita da quella dannata isola! Penso che probabilmente sceglierei Vert d’Encens di Tom Ford o Loumari Porthole. Quando fuori fa freddo, tendo a spruzzare la fragranza Tom Ford nel diffusore di olio del mio salotto. Quando fa caldo, spruzzo Loumari’s Porthole. Entrambe queste fragranze mi ricordano di essere a casa e, come si suol dire, la casa è dove si trova il cuore!

First olfactory memory. For as long as I can remember, I was always captivated by different smells. I would always take notice of the smell of a room or a particular flower I happened to come across. I can recall my mother telling me about brown marmorated stink bugs, and I would seek them out in my backyard when I lived in Greece. I would stomp on them and pick them up just to smell them. I took an interest in different smells, good or bad, for as long as I could remember.
What is perfume for you? Perfume is so much more than just a means of smelling good. Perfume is an extension of your personality, a means by which you convey how you feel on a given day, and lastly, it’s an olfactory accessory. The way we wear a different article of clothing every day, I like to wear a different fragrance every day. As they say, variety is the spice of life, so I wouldn’t want to wear the same fragrance every day. Perfume, for me, is an unspoken language that conveys some of the most intimate parts of one’s personality.
How was your love for perfumes born? I would credit my mother for getting me into the world of perfumes. She would always gift me fragrances (everything from Paco Rabanne Pour Homme to Givenchy Pi), and it instilled a love for fragrances in me. My first ever fragrance is CK Be by Calvin Klein. I got into the habit of wearing it every day, and I started looking forward to wearing it every morning. It became a part of my daily grooming routine. If it weren’t for my mother, I may not have the obsession with fragrances that I have today.
How many perfumes do you own? It’s been a while since I last counted, but I would guess it’s somewhere between 2,500 and 3,000 bottles! This does not include decants. I know, it’s quite excessive. Haha.
What kind of perfumes do you prefer? Throughout the years, I have grown to love every genre equally. I always considered floral fragrances to be my least favorite, but lately, I have been really enjoying my jasmine perfumes. Nothing beats a high-quality floral perfume. It does a great job of connecting you to nature and bringing about a sense of tranquility.
Among your perfumes, what represents you the most? I am fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to creatively direct several fragrances. I think that no fragrance represents me better than one that I have directly worked on. One such fragrance is called Raised Spirits, and it is an expression of one of my favorite genres! It is a gourmand fragrance that features a salted butter fudge accord, caramel, brown sugar syrup, and vanilla. The sweetness is exactly what I crave in the colder weather, and it has been a pleasure to work on it for over a year. Being a creative director has given me the opportunity to travel the world and work with some of my favorite perfumers in the industry. For this, I am very grateful.
The perfume that makes you feel powerful and confident. The perfumes that make me feel the most confident are the ones that are universally liked. While I occasionally enjoy wearing fragrances that push the proverbial envelope, I know that I inherently run the risk of a fragrance-sensitive individual not being too keen on accepting what I’m wearing. Therefore, fragrances like Louis Vuitton’s Meteore or Frederic Malle’s Uncut Gem always make me feel confident!
The perfume that makes you a child again. The fragrances that make me feel youthful or channel my inner child are the ones that I spent most of my youth wearing! These would include CK Be by Calvin Klein, Givenchy Pi, Armani Attitude, Calvin Klein’s Crave, and Axe Dark Temptation. While I don’t really wear many of these fragrances anymore, they will all hold a special place in my heart for a long time to come.
The perfume you have used the longest. I have been collecting fragrances since I was 10 years old, so there are several fragrances that have been in my collection for over two decades. However, there are many fragrances that I have repurchased several times throughout the years. These fragrances are Au Masculin by Lempicka and Le Male by Jean Paul Gaultier. There are certain fragrances that I wear daily for prolonged periods of time. For other fragrances, I wear them once and there may be weeks or even months before I find myself in the mood to wear them again.
The perfume you are wearing today. Can you describe it to me with three adjectives? The perfume I am wearing today is Percival by Parfums de Marly, and I would describe it as fresh, resolute, and dynamic.
A perfume that evokes happy moments. A fragrance that always elevates my mood is Nishane Ege. I wore it on a trip to Bryson City, North Carolina, and the fragrance always reminds me of relaxing times spent with friends and family! Whenever I need a pick-me-up, this fragrance always does the trick! There is also something about the herbal and aromatic notes in the fragrance that I find very relaxing.
If you were forced to choose just one perfume from your collection to bring with you to a desert island, what would it be? The fragrance I would bring is the one that would remind me most of home. This poignant reminder would alleviate feelings of homesickness. I would need that constant reminder to motivate and inspire me to find a way off that darn island! I think I would probably choose Tom Ford’s Vert d’Encens or Loumari Porthole. When it gets cold outside, I tend to spray the Tom Ford fragrance in my living room’s oil diffuser. When the weather is hot, I spray Loumari’s Porthole. Both of those fragrances remind me of being at home, and like they say, home is where the heart is!
