Primo ricordo olfattivo…
Cucinare con le spezie. Ma mia madre cucina con le spezie, non io ovviamente.
Ricordo come la cucina di mia mamma e della sua famiglia fosse sempre così profumata. Le spezie e le erbe usate nella mia cultura erano tra le più inebrianti e riempivano la stanza. E non sto parlando di spezie asiatiche ma soprattutto di spezie ed erbe mediterranee e mediorientali che includono l’uso di limoni, succo di limone con peperoni freschi e sotto forma di spezie, cipolle, aglio, erbe aromatiche come menta, basilico, alcuni fiori come come rosa, e fiori d’arancio insieme a molti altri ingredienti tipici della cucina libanese. Questi sono alcuni dei miei primissimi ricordi olfattivi che ho.
Come è nata la tua passione per le fragranze?
Grazie a mia madre e mio padre che erano “spruzzatori seriali” ho iniziato ad apprezzare le fragranze e alla giovane età di 14 anni ho ricevuto la mia prima bottiglia di Drakkar Noir di Guy Laroche. Fino ad allora avevo sperimentato e indossato alcune fragranze di mio padre tra cui Polo Green, Aramis by Aramis ma anche Aramis Tuscany Pour Uomo, Halston Z-14, Caron Pour Un Homme De Caron, Royal Copenhagen, Geoffrey Beene Grey Flannel, Pierre Cardin, Brut di Fabergé e molti altri. Ma ero anche molto abituato ad annusare le fragranze di mia madre come YSL Rive Gauche, YSL Opium, Dior Poison, Guy Laroche Fidgi, Lancome Fidgi e molti altri.
Cos’è per te il profumo?
Per me il profumo è un modo per esprimermi, mettermi di buon umore o per rendermi felice, o anche ricordare un momento o un periodo della mia vita.
Adoro comprare profumi durante un viaggio che mi ricorderanno sempre quel particolare viaggio o periodo della mia vita. Ma uso anche il profumo solo per rendermi felice o avere un buon profumo. Sono una persona molto legata agli odori, quindi a volte desidero solo un certo stile di odore. e il modo migliore di godermi quel particolare odore è afferrare un flacone. Per me l’olfatto è uno dei sensi più importanti e amo esercitare il mio senso dell’olfatto il più possibile. Mi piace annusare odori belli e talvolta odori meno belli.
Della tua collezione di fragranze quale ti rappresenta di più?
Direi che della mia collezione di fragranze quello che mi rappresenta di più è Dior Homme Parfum. È morbido e misterioso all’esterno ma quando indossato la vera bestia si rivela. Proprio come la mia personalità.
Un odore senza il quale non puoi vivere?
Fiore d’arancio. Il profumo degli dei. Mi piace la combinazione degli odori dei fiori bianchi che a volte ricordano il gelsomino con l’aggiunta degli agrumi. È un profumo paradisiaco e la cosa migliore è stare in un aranceto e annusare i fiori d’arancio riscladati dal sole primaverile. È magico. Ma dovrei dire che l’intero albero di arancio ha un profumo senza il quale non posso vivere. Perché alla fine oltre a godere la fragranza dei fiori mi piace anche quella delle foglie, e ovviamente l’odore del frutto. Grazie a Dio abbiamo questi profumi che mi rendono molto felice.
Un odore che ami…
Benzina. Non so perché ma è un odore che mi piace. Non guido perché non ho un’auto, ma a volte ne noleggio una e mi piace fare il pieno perché mi piace l’odore della benzina in una stazione di servizio. È un odore strano. Quando ero bambno ho viaggiato molto in macchina come i miei genitori, per tutto il Medio Oriente, e ricordo quando ci fermavamo alle stazioni di servizio per fare il pieno di benzina e io sentivo quell’odore molto pungente. Inestimabile.
Un profumo di cibo che ami…
La cucina libanese di mia madre. Soprattutto se contiene spezie e menta essiccata e naturalmente aglio e succo di limone. E’ un aroma molto inebriante che è molto confortante. Lo adoro e mentre scrivo il solo pensiero mi sta facendo venire fame.
Un odore che ti fa tornare bambino…
Il profumo del latte. Lo bevo tutti i giorni con il cappuccino ma è quell’odore del latte, prima di mescolarlo con l’espresso, mi riporta sempre a quando ero giovane.
Che odore ha la tua casa?
Profumi ovviamente ma anche cemento e mobili antichi insieme all’odore di alcuni vecchi libri.
L’odore della tua città?
San Francisco è una città costiera, quindi c’è sempre l’odore della brezza marina nell’aria, ma sempre con gli aromi di alcuni dei migliori cibi che puoi mangiare in tutti gli Stati Uniti. Cibi cinesi o altri cibi asiatici, insieme al deliziosa cucina messicana è ciò che senti anche in certi quartieri.
Collezioni qualcosa?
Colleziono profumi. Li colleziono dal 2012. Ho oltre 4500 bottiglie che ho acquistato personalmente o che mi sono state regalate. Collezionavo musica e film, ma ora sono in formato digitale. Ora colleziono solo profumi perché è la mia passione, e ancora non si possono creare profumi in formato digitale. Mi piacerebbe portare la mia collezione a 10.000 bottiglie.
3 luoghi della tua città che ami scelti in base all’odore dei luoghi
Il primo posto sarebbe il mio bar preferito Peets Coffee0. Ci sono più sedi in tutta la città. Senti l’aroma del caffè già da fuori. Amo molto i loro caffè e sono lì quasi tutti i giorni.
Il secondo posto è Sweetgreen, un ristorante che non frequento ma ci passo davanti per andare in palestra e gli aromi che si diffondono nell’aria da questo posto sono così inebrianti. Ci sono gli odori delle spezie che mi ricordano mia mamma quando cucinava e mi riportano indietro nel tempo. Probabilmente dovrei mangiare lì, ma non lo faccio mai perché è un pò lontano dai posti che frequento abitualmente, ma gli aromi di questo posto sono semplicemente i migliori. Odore molto confortante.
Il terzo posto che suggerirei è Ocean Beach/Baker Beach, in una giornata invernale dopo la pioggia ha uno dei migliori odori della terra. È la combinazione dell’aria dell’oceano, della terra e gli alberi di eucalipto che lo rende davvero magico. Verde, terroso, marino (e in genere non sono un fan delle fragranze marine) insieme a umidità e nebbia. Non ho ancora sentito niente di simile in un profumo, ma forse un giorno mi capiterà.

First Olfactory Memory…
Cooking with spices. But my mom cooking with spices not me of course.
I remember how my moms cooking and her families cooking was always so fragrant. The spices and herbs used in my culture was some of the most intoxicating and it would fill up a room. And I’m not talking about Asian spices but mostly Mediterranean and Middle Eastern spices and herbs which includes the usage of lemons, lemon juice with peppers fresh and in spice form, onions, garlic, aromatic herbs such as mint and basil and some flowers such as rose and orange blossom along with many other ingredients that went into the cooking of Lebanese cuisine. This is some of my very first olfactory memories I remember as a kid.
How did your love for fragrances come about?
Thanks to my mom and dad who were oversprayers I started enjoying fragrances and at the young age of 14 I got my first ever bottle of Drakkar Noir by Guy Laroche. But up until then I had experienced and worn some my dad’s fragrances including Polo Green, Aramis by Aramis but also Aramis Tuscany Pour Uomo, Halston Z-14, Caron Pour Un Homme De Caron, Royal Copenhagen, Geoffrey Beene Grey Flannel, Pierre Cardin, Brut by Faberge and many others. But I was also very used to smelling my moms fragrances such as YSL Rive Gauche, YSL Opium, Dior Poison, Guy Laroche Fidgi, Lancome Fidgi and many others.
What is perfume for you?
For me perfume is a way to express myself with scented water and also to put you in a mood or to make me happy and or to have as a way to remember a time or period in my life. I love buying perfumes on a trip which always will remind me of that particular trip and or period of my life. But also I use perfume to just make me happy and smell great. I’m a very smell associated person so sometimes I just crave a certain style of a smell and for me it’s the best way to enjoy that particular style of smell by grabbing a bottle of something to wear or just sprits somewhere and smell. For me smell is one of the most important senses and I love to exercise my sense of smell as much as I can. I enjoy smelling beautiful smells and sometimes not so beautiful smells.
From your collection of fragrances which one represents you the most?
I should say from my collection of fragrances the one that represents me the most is Dior Homme Parfum. It’s soft and mysterious from the outside but when worn the true beast reveals itself. Just like my personality.
A smell you can’t live without?
Orange Blossom. This is a scent from the God’s. I enjoy the combination of the smells of white flowers which sometimes are jasmine like with the addition of the citruses. It’s a heavenly scent and best thing yet is to be stuck in an orange grove and smelling the orange blossoms baking under the spring sun. It’s magical. But I should say that I would love to say the entire orange tree is a smell I can’t live without. Because in the end I enjoy the smell of the flowers of the orange tree but I also enjoy the leaves, the tree itself and of course the smell of the fruit. Thank God we have this smell. The smell makes me very happy.
An odor that you love…
Gasoline. I don’t know why but it’s a smell I enjoy. I don’t drive as I don’t have a car but sometimes I rent a car and love to fill the gas in it as I do enjoy that smell of the gasoline at a gas station. It’s a strange smell but I remember ever since I was a little kid my parents and I did road trips and traveled a lot throughout the Middle East and I remember stopping at gas stations and getting gas filled in the car and smelling that very pungent smell. Priceless.
A smell of food you love…
My mother’s Lebanese cooking. Especially if it contains spices and dried mint and of course garlic and lemon juice. This is very intoxicating aroma that is very comforting. I absolutely love it and it’s making me really hungry now typing this all out.
A smell that makes you feel like a child again…
The smell of milk always makes me feel like a child again. I have it daily with my cappuccinos but it’s that smell of the milk before I mix it with espresso that always takes me back to when I was young and served milk over and over again as food to eat for nutrition for a young child.
What does your home smell like?
Perfume of course also concrete and old antique furniture. Along with the smell of some old books mostly.
The smell of your city?
San Francisco is a coastal city so there’s always a sea breeze smell in the air but always with the aromas of some of the best foods you can eat in all of the USA. Chinese or other Asian foods, along with delicious Mexican food is what you also smell in certain neighborhoods.
Do you collect anything?
I collect perfumes. I have been collecting since 2012. I have over 4500 bottles that I have purchased myself or were gifted to me. I used to collect music and movies but those are now in digital format. Now I only collect perfumes because it’s my passion and you cannot make perfume in digital format now can you? But I mostly collect perfumes now and would love to grow my collection to 10,000 bottles. And who knows it might happen one day?
3 places of your city you love chosen based on the smell of the places
First place would be my favorite coffee shop Peets Coffee and there are multiple locations throughout the city. Strong coffee aromas are always projected out of these cafes. Love their coffees very much and I’m there almost everyday.
The second place is Sweetgreen a restaurant that I don’t frequent but I walk past it to go to my gym and the aromas wafting in the air from this place is so intoxicating. And there are the smells of spices that remind me of my moms cooking with spices and it takes me back. I should probably eat there but I never do as it’s a bit away from where I go or hang out in the city but the aromas of this place when they are preparing and or cooking food is just the best. Very comforting smell.
The third place I would suggest is Ocean Beach/Baker Beach where on a winter day after the rain has one of the best smells on earth. It’s the combination of the ocean air along with the earth and the eucalyptus trees that makes it very magical. Green, earthy, marine (and typically not a fan of marine) along with dampness and fog. Wow. I haven’t smelled anything like this in a perfume yet but maybe one day I will.
